Androgenic Alopecia This is a condition where women will loose hair most often in the frontal area of the head and can extend back into the crown. The condition is a genetic condition where the hair follicles are coded genetically to fall out. This is different then the overall thinning of hair that can occur. The best way to know is to be seen and have your condition evaluated and photographed. Hair loss secondary to Plastic surgery Forehead lifts and face lifts can cause hair loss and change the shaper of the hair line. The most common area of hair loss is in the temple and sideburn areas. It will most often occur in the first three months after surgery and will not grow back. Treatments Topical Minoxidil (Rogaine) This is a medication that is applied twice a day to area of concern. For the medication to work it has to massaged into the tissue, it does no good on the hair. If you try and use the men’s Minoxidil it is too strong and you could develop facial hair. Oral medication These are medications that block the formation of DHT and can only be used in women that are non-child bearing. If the medication is taken by a women that becomes pregnant the baby could have birth defects. There are two medication available which are Propecia (finasteride) and Avodart (dutasteride). In my practice I have found that Avodart to be the most effective. It is probably due to the fact that Avodart shuts down the DHT production almost 100% while the Propecia only shuts is down about 60%. Hair Transplants Women that are candidates for surgery can have a hair transplant. This procedure is the transplanting of follicles from the back of head to the area of loss. It done under local anesthesia and in most cases there is enough hair in the area to camouflage so people will not know that the surgery has been performed. Reasons for hair transplant Androgenic hair loss Many women still have the frontal hair line and the loss is just behind the area where the transplant is performed. Hair loss in Hair loss from scars Women with scars from face lifts can have these filled in using the follicular unit transplant. The grafts are dissected under a microscope and transplanted into tiny slits the size of the hair to be transplanted. Recession loss and side burn loss Often times in face lifts women will lose their sideburns and again the lateral slit is the best method for transplanting hair in this area to re-create the sideburn. Unhappy with hair line Women can lose hair in the hair line or may be born with a hair line they are unhappy with. This can be transplanted to correct this problem. Side Affects Shock loss is the biggest concern with hair transplant. Women who have a lot of miniaturized hair in the area of transplanting can have temporary loss of the hair in the area after the transplant. The only way that this can be determined is to have your hair evaluated with magnification and determine the amount of miniaturized hair in the area. More and more women are having hair transplantation today and getting excellent results. Call my office for an evaluation or email me photos of your situation and I will discuss all your options and fees. |
