Lateral Slit Hair Transplantation

Lateral Slit hair transplantation refers to the method at which the surgeon prepares the sites for the transplanted hair. A lateral slit is prepared by creating an incision in a lateral angle as opposed to a sagital angle. Until recently the sagital site has been the most common method in hair transplantation. Dr. DeYarman used the sagital method up until approximately a 5 years ago when he became aware of the many benefits with using the lateral slit method.

When creating a lateral slit incision, Dr. DeYarman must consider many factors such as, the direction of hair growth in the area being transplanted, the desired density, and the size and length of each graft. The length of the graft is significant, if there is a long graft, care must be taken when creating the site to avoid damaging surrounding hairs. The length of the graft also will determine the angle of the site.

One of the most significant benefits from the lateral slit method is that it allows the surgeon to mimic the natural direction and angle of each hair. Each site is created by analyzing the neighboring area of hair around the site so the surgeon can reproduce the hair pattern. As a result, as each transplanted hair emerges from the scalp it will grow and lay in the same direction as its neighboring non-transplanted hairs.

Another advantage associated with the lateral slit technique is that when the site is created the pressure on the graft changes considerably unlike sagital method. The sagital method creates lateral pressure on either side of the graft; as a result, the more grafts that are placed per square centimeter will increase the chance of compression and popping. With lateral slits the site is created at an angle (See photo), which changes the pressure on the graft to up and down vs. side-to-side allowing the surgeon to place more grafts per square centimeter. With this change in pressure on the graft it eliminates compression and popping commonly seen with the sagital method.

In addition, lateral sites are created at an angle decreasing the probability of vascular damage commonly seen with the sagital method. When the blood supply is adversely affected it can result in poor growth.

The blades made to create the sites are custom made to match the exact size of the graft to be inserted. This insures a better fit and success for the graft to grow,

A final benefit associated with the lateral slit method is that is allows the surgeon to transplant temples and sideburns, areas that are difficult to transplant using the sagital method.

The lateral slit method is far superior to any other type of technology in hair restoration today. This technique is constantly being sought out by patients’ worldwide. It is a very precise and calculated method of surgery which takes much more time and patience from the surgeon; it is for this very reason that clinics performing multiple cases per day will never utilize this technique.
